- Footie Jammies! My babies LIVED in these jammies day and night during the newborn stage. They cover all the bases for easy diapering access, warm & cozy including the toes-ies, mittens to prevent scratching, and of course adorable! HERE is the MUST-HAVE option with a double zipper. Trust me, you want it!
- Onesies, onesies, and more onesies! Think 8-10 in newborn size and another set in 0-3 months. Although they will move out of the newborn onesies fairly quickly, you still need them. Something I hadn’t considered as a first-time mom was the amount of spit-up babies produce! Due to this, you can go through several onesies in a day. We’ll talk about how to cut down on that next. HERE are my FAVS for the newborn stage!
- Bibs are the the answer for babies that spit up a lot, most do. If you want to save the clothing grab several bibs for your new little one! I loved THESE ones!
- Socks and booties are essential in keeping those tiny toes warm. Despite the fact that they frequently come right off, they truly are a necessity. HERE are some options with elastic cuffs that will help to alleviate this issue! I find the longer ones stay on better.
- Weather-appropriate outerwear if needed. I would go for a full-body one like THIS one.
Diapering
- Mountains (and I mean mountains) of diapers in newborn size to start. Newborns can go through a shocking number of diapers in a single day – sometimes as many as 10 or 12! This is because their digestive systems are still immature and they’re eating frequently. Plan on stocking up!
- Unscented baby wipes: We use them for EVERYTHING! You will want a lot of these on hand not only for the excessive said diaper changes but also for wiping faces, getting boogies, and everything in between!
- Diaper cream: Your baby’s bottom will thank you! Diaper rash is a common occurrence in the newborn world, caused by friction, moisture, and exposure to irritants. A good diaper cream will help soothe and protect your baby’s delicate skin. HERE is my favorite natural option!
- The ever-debated diaper pail. This one, some would say, is not essential. However, some families swear by them. I operated with, and without, and from my experience these are some factors for you to consider when determining if it’s a must-have for you. Do you frequently take out your main trash? Would you prefer the diapers to go out regularly with it? Will it bother you to have a large can full of dirty diapers? Would you prefer to have somewhere to throw it in the middle of the night rather than going to your main trash? The answers to these questions will help you decide if a diaper pail is right for you. HERE is a great option if you choose a pail!
Sleepy-Time
- A safe sleeping space like a bassinet or crib is key for starting your baby on the right foot for great sleep habits. With that said, there are plenty of moms who choose to co-sleep. That is a decision for you to make as a family and with the advice of a pediatrician. HERE was what we used for those first few months. I kept it right next to my bed and it was perfect! However, if you are looking for more of a co-sleeping option, THESE are great too!
- A few breathable swaddles to help soothe them to sleep. A snug swaddle recreates the feeling of being held tightly in the womb, increasing a sense of security and comfort. Additionally, swaddling limits some movement, which is calming for newborns who have a strong startle reflex (also known as the Moro reflex) or are feeling overstimulated. Although the standard swaddle is great to have and try, I found my babies actually preferred THIS one with the arms up rather than down!
- Pacifiers can be hit or miss but if you have a newborn that loves to suckle, then this is a definite MUST! Pacifiers can be very “baby specific” meaning, each baby may have their own preference. HERE are my top choices when looking for the one that your baby will love!
- White noise machine (trust me, it’s a sanity saver!) I’ve used a white noise machine for all of my kiddos and its one of those newborn essentials you might not think of but is so incredibly helpful. White noise not only masks disruptive sounds but it also mimics the womb in that, babies are constantly surrounded by shushing sounds from the mother’s heartbeat and blood flow. White noise can create a similar comforting sound that soothes and relaxes them. Definitely a newborn essential item! HERE is my favorite!
Newborn Essentials: Feeding
Whether breastfeeding or bottle-feeding, here’s are the newborn essentials you’ll need:
Breastfeeding
Nourishment and Hydration:
This is often overlooked but absolutely essential!! You can’t feed without being fed!
- Healthy snacks and meals: Breastfeeding requires extra calories, so fuel your body with nutritious foods. Easy-to-grab snacks on hand are key.
- Large water bottle: Stay hydrated! Increased fluid intake is necessary for ample milk production.
Comfort and Support:
- Nursing bras: Grab a bra or two (or three) designed specifically for breastfeeding with the easy-access clips or flaps. I spent a lot of time in nursing tank tops like THIS one as well. I actually still wear them as pajamas! HA!
- Nursing pillow: Oh my goodness these were a LIFE SAVER! I used a nursing pillow faithfully for every feeding. It offers so much support for both you and baby. It also helped with reducing the strain on my arms, back, and neck. HERE is my favorite!
- Finding comfortable clothing can be a challenge but easy-access nursing tops and dresses are essential. One trick I found, wear a tank top under your shirts for less exposure. HERE are some that will make breastfeeding in public or at home a lot easier.
- Reusable or Disposable breast pads: Yup, you need em! Leakage is bound to happen. I used both reusable and disposable and it all comes down to personal preference. For me, I liked to be able to switch them out frequently and the reusable option limited that so I opted for disposable.
Soothing and Healing:
- Nipple cream: Creams or soothing ointments help prevent and heal soreness, cracked nipples, and dryness. I opted for THIS lanolin-free organic one and loved it!
- Warm compresses or gel pads: Help relieve engorgement, plugged ducts, and encourage milk flow.
- Coconut Oil: Coconut oil is naturally moisturizing and can soothe sore, cracked nipples common in early breastfeeding. I also love that its antimicrobial properties also help protect against infection!
Breastfeeding Assistance:
- Breast pumps allow you to pump and store milk for flexibility, for when dad or another caregiver takes over a feeding, or if you experience any supply issues. Options include manual, electric, and wearable pumps. Pro Tip: Check with your insurance, they are usually covered! If you don’t have insurance there are options for you too. Check out this article for more: Finding A Breast Pump
- Milk storage bags: For freezing pumped milk safely.
- Haakaa, Milkies, or other milk collectors: These help catch any milk that may let down from the opposite breast during feedings to avoid wastage. No one wants wastage of that golden milk!
Optional but Nice-to-Have:
- Nursing cover: If you prefer more privacy while breastfeeding in public THIS is a great option!
- Hands-free pumping bra: These make pumping sessions easier and more convenient.
“There is no ‘one size fits all’ when it comes to breastfeeding. Every mother and baby is different, and the experience will be different for everyone.”

Bottle-Feeding
Feeding Supplies:
- Bottles: Start with 5 – 8 bottles in either 4 or 8 ounce sizes. Consider different brands or nipple types to find what your baby loves. HERE are some top brands!
- Bottle brush and nipple brush: You absolutely need these! They are essential for thorough cleaning, getting into those tricky parts of bottles and nipples.
- Formula: Choosing a formula can be a bit of trial and error but of course you are looking for something your baby tolerates well. Talk to your pediatrician for recommendations.
- Purified water is essential for newborns. You can get a water purifier for your home or fridge or purchase gallons at the store.
Out and About:
- Insulated bottle bag: Keeps bottles warm or cold while you’re away! THIS is an adorable option!
- Formula dispenser: Pre-measure formula for easy mixing on the go. This is also great for dad or caregivers.
Tips:
- Experiment with bottle brands: Babies can have preferences for specific nipple shapes and flow rates, so don’t be afraid to try a few options.
- Prepare for nighttime feedings: Have a pre-made bottle in the fridge or a formula dispenser filled for those sleepy feedings.
- Stock up on supplies: Formula, spare bottles, and nipples are things to buy in bulk if possible!
If you’re not breastfeeding or pumping at all, it typically takes seven to ten days after delivery to return to a non-pregnant and non-lactating hormonal level. During that time, you might feel some discomfort if your breasts become engorged with milk.

Newborn Essentials: Out and About
Leaving the cozy cocoon of home with a newborn can feel intimidating, but having the right gear makes it a breeze. Add these newborn essentials to your must-have list:
- Infant car seat: An absolute non-negotiable for safe transportation. You’ll want to ensure it’s properly installed in your vehicle. There are generally YouTube videos for installation on most of the common brands.
- Stroller: Choose a versatile stroller accommodating your car seat and offering storage space for essentials. Some of the features I find most important are an adjustable handlebar, large sunshade, and smooth maneuverability.
- Diaper bag: Opt for a roomy bag with plenty of compartments for organized packing. Ensure it has comfortable straps and includes a changing pad. I used a different one for each child and THIS was my favorite!
- Blanket: A blanket can serve as a makeshift changing pad, a cover-up, or a play mat on the go.
Tips for outings:
- Start with short trips: Ease into excursions by starting with shorter outings near home.
- Pack for everything: Pack extra diapers, wipes, a change of clothes, and anything else your baby might need, just in case.
- Go with the flow: Be flexible and don’t stress if things don’t go according to plan. Babies are unpredictable!
Other Super Useful Things
These make life a whole lot easier, but technically, you could survive without them:
- Baby bath: I mean, kind of essential but you could use a towel linked sink if you had to. A basic infant tub is super helpful though. THIS one is perfect AND it grows with your baby!
- Nail clippers or file: Those tiny nails grow like crazy!
- Baby wash and lotion: Opt for gentle, fragrance-free options.
- Healthcare basics: Infant thermometer, nasal aspirator, and boogie picker (yup, it’s a thing) THIS is the one I used.
- Bouncer or swing: Perfect for some hands-free time for you!
- A Nest Sleeper (as seen in pic above) is something I can’t call an essential but it was SO helpful! I used it in so many ways including: for naps next to me on the couch, once baby transitioned out of the bassinet and into a crib, laying next to me while I was playing with my other kids on the floor, and more! HERE is the one I recommend!
What I Wish I’d Skipped
There are a lot of great baby products out there, but not everything is a must-have. Here’s what I found were NOT newborn essentials:
- Wipe warmer: Room temperature wipes are just fine.
- Fancy baby washcloths: Regular ones work perfectly.
- Tons of newborn clothes: They grow out of them SO fast.
- Shoes: They’re cute, but babies don’t need shoes until they’re walking.
- Excessive toys: In the early days, they’ll be more fascinated by you!
The Wrap Up
This list of newborn essentials is my way of helping you cut through the clutter and focus on what you and your sweet little one really needs – the stuff that gets you through those late-night diaper changes and cherished cuddle sessions. Now go embrace the glorious chaos of newborn life and ditch the pressure of picture-perfect parenting!
